27 Apr Izmir Mediterranean Biennial
As Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and K2 Contemporary Art Center, we are announcing our open call to artists for the Izmir Mediterranean Biennial, which will be held between October 1 and December 5, 2022.
Curated by Caroline David, the event will bring together 30 young artists from 23 countries with the people of Izmir. Sana Tamzini, João Ribas, Didem Yazıcı who have works on the Mediterranean and the Executive Director of the Young Creators from the Mediterranean Biennial Network (BJCEM), Federica Candelaresi, will serve as creative consultants of the event. The destination of the biennial will be the public spaces and special places of Izmir. The theme of the event is determined as “Looking at the Same Water” in order to study the cultural and historical codes of the Mediterranean.
Biennial Curator Caroline David
A specialist in the field of contemporary art, Caroline David has curated numerous exhibitions. She was director of the Regional Fund for Contemporary Art (FRAC) Nord Pas de Calais in 1984 and then of the Architecture Foundation in Brussels in 1996. In 2000, he was part of the founding team of Lille2004 European Capital of Culture, where he was head of the visual arts and exhibitions department. In 2006 he was Director of Visual Arts for the city of Lille (France) and then for lille3000. In 2015, he moved to Turkey as Director of the Izmir French Cultural Centre of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since the end of his assignment in Izmir in 2020, he has been working as an art consultant and exhibition curator at lille3000.

The first Izmir Mediterranean Biennial will be organised with young artists as part of the 2022 European Year of Youth. The Biennial determined the age criteria with reference to the standards of BJCEM, of which Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is a member. Izmir Mediterranean Biennial aims to open up space for new forms of expression by emphasising the ‘young’ in the context of BJCEM standards and the European Youth Year.
Who can apply?
Young artists wishing to participate in the Izmir Mediterranean Biennial should fill out the form at www.izmirakdenizbienali.com by1 June. The open call is open to artists aged 35 and under, born in or living in Mediterranean countries.
