Izmir and Çanakkale: Thinking Together on Contemporary Art Memory

Portİzmir and Çanakkale Biennial are united in the search for a model that will make the art memory they have created for their cities visible; open their accumulated knowledge in the field of contemporary art to sharing in a sustainable and permanent structure; inform and involve public authorities, the private sector and other art institutions in the process; and reconsider ‘museum’ theories and practices in the light of needs. K2 Contemporary Art Association and Çanakkale Biennial Initiative CABININ, which have strengthened their cooperation within the scope of different projects in recent years, have realised the first link of the ‘Thinking Together on Contemporary Art Memory’ processes.

Taking place between 15 June-20 November 2020, the project aimed to create an inspiring context on the sustainability of contemporary art memory for a month through exhibitions presenting a selection of artistic productions inspired by these cities, interviews and panels bringing together different institutions and experts in the field. In addition to the current pandemic conditions, all exhibitions and talks took place online due to the recent earthquake in Izmir.

The project was supported by the micro-financing of Space for Culture.
