12 Oct Memory Box: Memories of a Neighborhood
In its simplest form, memory is recollections of the recent and distant past based on narratives. It is an act of reminding connected to and/or related to the place. Although memory is seen as a characteristic of the individual, it also has a social dimension. Because societies are shaped by the memories of the individuals who make them up.
”Collective memory is selective, socially constructed, spatially inclusive – the memory of a society is a reconstruction of the past” (Halbwachs, 1992).
So, how does the construction of the past come to life through a mobile medium, free from its passive presence? By what means does this construction become a product of collective will? How does this whole process turn into a mobile and public performance?
‘Memory Box’ is a meeting that seeks answers to such questions rather than an exhibition. ‘Memory Box’ is also the final product of the project that started in December 2015 with the aim of remembering the transformation process of the ‘Cultural Center’ in İzmir Güzelyalı Neighborhood. The stories of the transformation of As Cinema, located in the heart of Güzelyalı Neighborhood, into the ‘Cultural Center’ in the 80s, which were examined to emphasize the initiative of the neighborhood, became visible with the ‘Memory Box’ placed in the park in June. In the exhibition, the components of this process are waiting to meet with visitors.
‘Memory Box’ opens on October 12 at 18:30 and closes with an open discussion on October 15 at 18:00.
