Small Worlds Workshop

In collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Izmir and K2 Contemporary Art Center, Brussels-based German artist Stefan Bohnenberger will organize a Small Worlds Workshop at K2 Gallery. The workshop will take place on April 14-30 between 14.00-19.00. The exhibition to be prepared afterwards will meet its audience on May 5th. Please see below for more information.

Upon the invitation of the Goethe Institute in Izmir, the artist came to Izmir to organize preparatory meetings and exchange ideas about small worlds. As a result, it was decided that K2 Gallery would be the ‘base’ for the ‘small worlds’ project in Izmir. So far, the artist has worked in similar workshops with around 300 participants in many different parts of the world. We are proud to welcome the next workshop in Izmir.

“Small worlds” can be defined as boxes in which small interior spaces or installations can be seen through the doorway above them. These boxes draw attention to the relationships between space, time, light and perception. As we, the viewers, stand in a certain place at a certain time, while at the same time our light source is determined; and as we look at these boxes, we are invited to recognize the uniqueness of the landscape we see inside the box as a result of our positioning within given conditions.

In order to understand the nature of the workshop, Stefan Bohnenberger has left the five boxes he made and the booklets of two of his workshops in different cities to the K2 Documentation and Artist Archive. Those who wish can examine the works during office hours.

The workshop will involve the production of the boxes and discussions based on the ideas behind them. It is a call for a real collaboration between the artists expected to participate in the process. Three possible modes of collaboration are envisioned: First, Bohnenberger will prepare the box (space and light) for a work (or a selection of works) brought by the participating artist. Secondly, the participant chooses the work to be placed in the box presented by Bohnenberger. Lastly, only the door peephole will be provided in the workshop and the participants will prepare their own boxes and artworks. In the words of Stefan Bohnenberger, “what they all have in common is the ritual of the presentation of the peephole, which will be given to each artist by me, a symbolic act of our common artistic journey.”

The workshop is open to artists who are interested in the subject and want to contribute their ideas. We invite you to invite friends who you think would also be interested.
An exhibition ‘curated’ by Stefan Bohnenberger will open to the audience following the workshop. The artist describes himself as an ‘anti-curator’, and is mainly interested in the underlying principles of collaboration between an artist and a curator.

Artists who are interested in participating in the workshop can share their work/portfolios, thoughts and questions about the workshop with Stefan Bohnenberger via e-mail (princestufitz@hotmail.com).
